Now, fast forward to today—we don’t buy old machines anymore.

We don’t buy machines that don’t take cards.

We buy smart.

And we’re building a business that works without us being on call 24/7.

That’s why we source our machines from a local warehouse in Irving, Texas that specializes in vending and gaming. Reliable machines, fewer problems.

And now?

We’re scaling.

We’ve hired a route runner to handle our restocks and collections—because we’ve built a system that can grow.

This is what it looks like when you move with intention.

You start small, but you think big.

You buy smarter.

You automate sooner.

Scared money doesn’t make money.

When we started, we didn’t have all the answers.

We bought six combo machines for $3,500—plus a 10% tax.

We had them paid off in a year. And then?

We flipped every single one.

Not because it was a mistake.

But because they served their purpose: they got us in the game.

Eventually, we outgrew them.

The locations weren’t producing. The machines were old and outdated.

So we pulled them, sold them to folks ready to get started, and reinvested in machines that matched our vision.

What Type of Vending Should You Start With?

When most people think about vending, they only think about soda and snack machines. But the industry has evolved — and so should your strategy.

Here are the three categories to know:

1. Snack & Beverage Vending

This is the most traditional — chips, candy, sodas, waters, energy drinks.

They’re reliable, low maintenance, and great for schools, warehouses, and break rooms. But you need to stock smart. The right mix of products matters.

2. Micro Markets

Micro markets are open-concept vending stores — think shelves, fridges, and a self-checkout kiosk.

They’re ideal for corporate offices, industrial buildings, and gyms with 100+ daily foot traffic. They require more setup and permissions, but the revenue potential is next level.

3. AI Vending Machines

These machines are typically freezer-style or refrigerated units that unlock with a credit/debit card swipe. Once the card is swiped, the door opens, the customer selects their items, and the machine automatically tracks what was taken and charges accordingly.

No button-pushing. No guessing. Just a seamless experience that keeps your customers coming back.

They’re perfect for:

• Office spaces

• Warehouses

• Auto dealerships

• Break rooms with 24/7 access

And because the shopping experience is smoother and more flexible, you’re likely to see higher average sales per visit.

AI vending is all about increasing profits through better user experience — not complicated tech

Start simple — but think long-term. There’s money in traditional vending, but micro markets and AI vending are the future.

How to Actually Start Your Vending Business: First 5 Steps

This is the foundation. If you skip this part, everything else gets harder.

Here’s how we did it — and how you should too.

Step 1: Establish Your Business (LLC or DBA)

Before you buy anything, set up your business legally.

You can start as a DBA (Doing Business As) if you want to move fast and stay low-cost.

But long term, we recommend forming an LLC for liability protection and to look more credible when pitching locations.

Solo or Partnership?

We chose a partnership — and it’s worked because we play to our strengths.

I handle:

• Scouting and landing new locations

• Running operations

• Managing vendors

Brian handles:

• Route runners

• Inventory management

• Day-to-day maintenance

Split the weight. You’ll move further, faster.

Step 2: Open a Business Bank Account

This is where a lot of people mess up.

Never mix your personal money with business funds. It gets sloppy fast — and it’ll bite you when it’s tax time or if you ever want to get funding.

Open a separate checking account for your vending business as soon as you register your business name.

Step 3: Find a Location — Before You Buy a Machine

Most beginners do this backwards.

They buy a machine first, then look for a location. But if that machine doesn’t fit the space — guess what? You’re stuck.

The location determines the machine. Not the other way around.

Ask yourself:

• Is this high foot traffic?

• Is this a 24/7 facility?

• Will they need snacks, drinks, or both?

• Would a micro market make more sense here?

Once you land a location, then you source the best-fit machine.

Step 4: Source Your Machines Locally

You don’t have to buy brand-new machines off a website.

Here’s how we find machines:

• Facebook Marketplace

• Local vending warehouses

• Operators selling off routes

You can find combo machines, drink-only, or even full routes if someone’s retiring or shifting focus. These deals happen offline more than online.

Tip: Don’t just look for machines — look for machines with location contracts already attached.

Step 5: Treat This Like a Business, Not a Side Hustle

This business can make money while you sleep — but only if you treat it like a business.

That means:

• Having a system for inventory

• Setting up routes for consistent restocking

• Tracking your expenses and profits

• Delegating the right tasks

Vending is one of the few businesses that lets you get in low — and build big.

But you’ve got to come correct from day one.

How This Hit Me Like a Ton of Bricks

The first time I read The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho, it changed my life. I make it a point to read it every year because its message is that powerful.

There’s a part in the book that talks about a mysterious force—this negative force that tries to convince you that your dreams are impossible. That you’re foolish for even trying.

And I felt that.

Because I’ve had people look at me and say, “That’s not how life works.”

I’ve had people tell me, “You’re living in a fantasy.”

They laugh, I laugh—but deep down, I know this:

Everything I have ever set out to do, I have accomplished.

Not because it was easy. Not because I had all the answers.

But because I refuse to believe the lie that I can’t.

I’m Small, But I’m Mighty—And So Are You

Here’s the thing: I’m small in stature—but I am mighty.

It reminds me of David and Goliath. Goliath was huge, powerful, and expected to win. David? Small, underestimated, counted out. But what did David have? Hustle. Drive. Resilience.

And that’s what people forget—it’s not about the size of the person, it’s about the size of the fight inside them.

It’s that deep, unshakable desire placed in our hearts for a reason.

But here’s what I know for sure: If you truly want something, it’s because that desire was placed in you for a reason.

And when you want something bad enough, the universe will conspire to help you achieve it.

That doesn’t mean it’ll be easy.

That doesn’t mean it’ll happen overnight.

But when you align yourself with your purpose, doors will open.

I’ve seen it happen in my own life. The right people, the right opportunities, the right moments—they always find me when I’m moving toward my Personal Legend.

And the same can happen for you.

Because life is not easy.

Because the urge to quit is very real.

I’ve felt it before.

During the pandemic, there were moments when I wanted to give up on my entrepreneurship journey. Everything felt uncertain. It felt like nothing was working. I thought, “Maybe this isn’t meant for me.”

And I know some of you might be feeling that way right now.

Maybe you’re at the point where you’re about to call it quits.

The Weight of “What If”

How many people live like this? They wake up at 50, 60, or 70 years old and realize they’ve been living someone else’s life. They’re haunted by the “what ifs.”

• What if I had tried?

• What if I had taken that chance?

• What could I have become if I had believed in myself?

Regret is a heavy burden to bear. And the saddest part? It’s avoidable. But only if you choose to take the leap now.

A Story of My Own

I’ll never forget the years after I graduated from Prairie View A&M University. At 22, I had a plan. I was going to get my master’s degree from the University of Central Florida, land a dream job, and become the first Black woman to serve as a collegiate athletic director. That was the vision. That was my purpose—or so I thought.

But life didn’t follow my plan. Every door I knocked on stayed shut. The opportunities I prayed for didn’t come. I was determined—I’ve always been a fighter—but nothing seemed to work.

Meanwhile, everyone around me seemed to thrive. My friends were buying homes, starting families, and landing dream jobs. I, on the other hand, had to move back home with my parents, working an overnight job for $10 an hour. I felt like a failure.

The Dark Night of the Soul

One night, I sat alone in my room, overwhelmed by frustration. I felt angry with God. I had done everything “right”—so why wasn’t my life moving forward? Why was I stuck? I cried out, asking, Why aren’t You giving me the desires of my heart?

I’ll never forget the response I felt deep in my spirit: “I’m putting you in a position to build something.”

At first, I didn’t understand. Build what? I wasn’t a builder. But over time, I realized God wasn’t talking about constructing something physical—He was asking me to build my purpose.

Two Doors

I began to see a vision. There were two doors in front of me.

The first door opened to a fully built house. Behind it were ready-made jobs, businesses, and opportunities. Everything was prepared for me. All I had to do was walk in. It would be easy, comfortable even. But deep down, I knew it wasn’t mine. Walking through that door meant living a life someone else had created for me.

The second door was different. When I opened it, there was nothing but empty space. No path, no safety net, just potential. God said to me, “This is your purpose. But you’ll have to build it yourself. It will be hard. There will be days you’ll feel lost, frustrated, and unseen. But if you trust Me, this path will take you to places you never imagined.”

Standing in front of those two doors, I made my choice. I chose the second door—the door of uncertainty, frustration, and faith.

Walking by Vision, Not Sight

Here’s the thing about faith: it requires vision. And vision isn’t the same as eyesight. Eyesight shows you what’s right in front of you:

• An empty bank account.

• Zero followers on Substack.

• Missed opportunities.

Vision, on the other hand, shows you what could be. It shows you speaking on stages, inspiring others, building a legacy. Vision is what keeps you moving forward when the physical evidence isn’t there yet.

When I chose that second door, I had no idea what would happen. I just knew I didn’t want to live with regret. I didn’t want to get to the end of my life wondering, What if I had tried?

The Reward of Faith

Since that day, I’ve experienced things I never could have planned for. I’ve spoken to NFL teams like the Pittsburgh Steelers. I’ve built a vending machine business. I’ve written two books. I’ve traveled, connected with incredible people, and seen God work in ways I never thought possible.

None of this is to boast—it’s to show you what can happen when you take the leap. When you walk by faith, not by sight.

The Danger of Letting the Music Die

The truth is, many people will never open that second door. They’ll stay where it’s safe, letting their dreams die inside of them. They’ll carry a song they were meant to sing but never let the world hear it.

Don’t let that be you. Don’t let fear, doubt, or the comfort of safety stop you from becoming what you were created to be.

Don’t be like the old man who let his dream die inside of him. I made an agreement with myself long ago that I would take every risk, chase every dream, and go for it—no matter how hard, no matter how uncertain. And since that day, I’ve done just that.

A Lesson from Kobe Bryant

I once read an article about Kobe Bryant. In it, he talked about a speech he gave at the ESPYs, where he addressed his fellow athletes. He said something that stuck with me:

“We’re up here today not because of talent or ability. We’re up here because of 4 AMs. We’re up here because of two-a-days and five-a-days. We’re up here because of the work we put in when no one was watching.”

What he was saying was powerful: the spotlight, the applause, the recognition—it doesn’t come because of what happens in the light. It comes because of the effort you put in when no one’s around.
