Jobs that could let them go any minute.

And in 2025? Relying on a single income isn’t just risky — it’s financially reckless.

How We Started Our Vending Business With $0

Back in 2020, I made the decision to change the financial trajectory of my life — and my family’s legacy.

My parents are educated, middle-class, hardworking people. But even with degrees, they couldn’t teach me wealth. Not because they didn’t care — but because no one had taught them.

At some point, someone has to be the first.

So I took that responsibility on my back.

I didn’t have a lot of money. But I had clarity, and I had people I trusted.

I partnered with my sister and my friend Brian (who’s still my business partner today). Between the three of us, we came up with $1,500 each— and we used that to purchase six combo vending machines from a man who was selling off his routes.

We didn’t just buy machines.

We bought access. We bought proof of concept.

That was the beginning of everything.

Share

What Happened Next Changed Everything

We took those six machines and made them work.

Over time, we began placing in better locations, refining our inventory, and building real operational structure. It didn’t happen overnight — but it did happen.

Today, vending has become a real source of passive income for us.

But people always ask us:

“How do I actually start a vending business?”

“Where do I find locations?”

“What machines do I need? What do I say when I cold call?”

“How do I grow this into a full-time thing?”

And the truth is…

YOU NEED STRATEGY AND YOU JUST The research. The machines. The routes. The maintenance.

But here’s the thing: if you’re going to grow a business, you need distribution of weight.

You need people you trust. You need to leverage partnerships, pool resources, and create a system that runs without burning you out.

Because true freedom doesn’t come from doing everything yourself.

It comes from building something that works — even when you’re not working.

Okay, But How Do You Actually Start a Vending Business?

It starts with a question:

How much do you want to make per month?

Because that number dictates everything — especially location.

Right now, we operate in a school and a warehouse that each bring in over $1,000 a month.

Across all machines, we’re doing close to $6,000/month in gross sales, spending around $2,000/month in inventory.

That’s real cash flow — and that’s with partners, which makes the split worth it.

Here’s what we’ve learned:

Not all locations are created equal.
<div They’re the ones who move when it’s uncomfortable.

That’s how we got started. No perfect timing. No blueprint handed to us.

Just action and execution.

Getting started is the goal.

Not perfection. Not the “perfect” location.

Just momentum.

When we first stepped into the vending game, we bought six combo machines from a local seller. That was our entry point. It wasn’t the fanciest setup, and the locations weren’t ideal—but it got us in the door.

And that’s the part people miss:

You don’t need everything to be perfect to begin.

You just need to start.

Because once you do, the clarity comes. The momentum builds. And you figure things out as you move.

Now, fast forward to today—we don’t buy old machines anymore.

We don’t buy machines that don’t take cards.

We’re not in the game of maintenance headaches and refund complaints.

We buy smart.

We invest in BevMax machines—those sleek, glass-front drink machines you see in airports, with the crane that picks your drink. When it comes to snack machines we invest in the Evoke or the Mercato. Both are great investments.

Why? Because they work.

They’re efficient.

They perform.

Yes, they cost more up front—but they save us time, energy, and service calls down the road.

We learned that the machines you choose determine how hands-on you have to be.

And we’re building a business that works without us being on call 24/7.

That’s why we source our machines from a local warehouse in Irving, Texas that specializes in vending and gaming. Reliable machines, fewer problems.

And now?

We’re scaling.

We’ve hired a route runner to handle our restocks and collections—because we’ve built a system that can grow.

This is what it looks like when you move with intention.

You start small, but you think big.

You buy smarter.

You automate sooner.

And you build a business that gives you freedom—not another job.

So if you’re wondering how to start:

Start where you are.

Use what you have.

Figure the rest out along the way.

You don’t need 30 locations to win in vending.

You just need to be intentional.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" work.

We might have 15 or 20 machines, but we’re not running around town chasing 20 different stops.

Every location we choose has to have the potential for 2 or 3 machines in one space.

Because here’s the play:

Two strong locations with three machines each?

That’s six machines, high foot traffic, and smart, efficient routes.

Less time. More return.

If you do it right, vending can absolutely be lucrative.

But this isn’t a sprint.

Slow and steady wins the race.

Not every location is created equal.

And how you build depends on how much you want to earn.

If you’re aiming for real money, you’ve got to be ready to play smart.

Scared money doesn’t make money.

When we started, we didn’t have all the answers.

We bought six combo machines for $3,500—plus a 10% tax.

We had them paid off in a year. And then?

We flipped every single one.

Not because it was a mistake.

But because they served their purpose: they got us in the game.

Eventually, we outgrew them.

The locations weren’t producing. The machines were old and outdated.

So we pulled them, sold them to folks ready to get started, and reinvested in machines that matched our vision.

That’s when everything changed.

We stopped asking, “How do we start?” and started asking,

“How much do we want to make?”

There are two of us in this business—and we’re building for real income.

So we focused on the types of locations that could actually deliver that:

Schools. Snack & Beverage Vending

This is the most traditional — chips, candy, sodas, waters, energy drinks.

They’re reliable, low maintenance, and great for schools, warehouses, and break rooms. But you need to stock smart. The right mix of products matters.

2. Micro Markets

Micro markets are open-concept vending stores — think shelves, fridges, and a self-checkout kiosk.

They’re ideal for corporate offices, industrial buildings, and gyms with 100+ daily foot traffic. They require more setup and permissions, but the revenue potential is next level.

3. AI Vending Machines

These machines are typically freezer-style or refrigerated units that unlock with a credit/debit card swipe. Once the card is swiped, the door opens, the customer selects their items, and the machine automatically tracks what was taken and charges accordingly.

No button-pushing. No guessing. Just a seamless experience that keeps your customers coming back.

They’re perfect for:

Office spaces

Warehouses

Auto dealerships

Break rooms with 24/7 access

And because the shopping experience is smoother and more flexible, you’re likely to see higher average sales per visit.

AI vending is all about increasing profits through better user experience — not complicated tech

Start simple — but think long-term. There’s money in traditional vending, but micro markets and AI vending are the future.

How to Actually Start Your Vending Business: First 5 Steps

This is the foundation. If you skip this part, everything else gets harder.

Here’s how we did it — and how you should too.

Step 1: Establish Your Business (LLC or DBA)

Before you buy anything, set up your business legally.

You can start as a DBA (Doing Business As) if you want to move fast and stay low-cost.

But long term, we recommend forming an LLC for liability protection and to look more credible when pitching locations.

Solo or Partnership?

We chose a partnership — and it’s worked because we play to our strengths.

I handle:

Scouting and landing new locations

Running operations

Managing vendors

Brian handles:

Route runners

Inventory management

Day-to-day maintenance

Split the weight. You’ll move further, faster.

Step 2: Open a Business Bank Account

This is where a lot of people mess up.

Never mix your personal money with business funds. It gets sloppy fast — and it’ll bite you when it’s tax time or if you ever want to get funding.

Open a separate checking account for your vending business as soon as you register your business name.

Step 3: Find a Location — Before You Buy a Machine

Most beginners do this backwards.

They buy a machine first, then look for a location. But if that machine doesn’t fit the space — guess what? You’re stuck.

The location determines the machine. Not the other way around.

Ask yourself:

Is this high foot traffic?

Is this a 24/7 facility?

Will they need snacks, drinks, or both?

Would a micro market make more sense here?

Once you land a location, then you source the best-fit machine.

Step 4: Source Your Machines Locally

You don’t have to buy brand-new machines off a website.

Here’s how we find machines:

Facebook Marketplace

Local vending warehouses

Operators selling off routes

You can find combo machines, drink-only, or even full routes if someone’s retiring or shifting focus. These deals happen offline more than online.

Tip: Don’t just look for machines — look for machines with location contracts already attached.

Step 5: Treat This Like a Business, Not a Side Hustle

This business can make money while you sleep — but only if you treat it like a business.

That means:

Having a system for inventory

Setting up routes for consistent restocking

Tracking your expenses and profits

Delegating the right tasks

Vending is one of the few businesses that lets you get in low — and build big.

But you’ve got to come correct from day one.

Let’s Keep It Real.

If this gave you clarity or sparked something in you — let us know in the poll below.

We don’t make noise just to talk. People were losing jobs left and right, but one thing stayed consistent—people still needed snacks and drinks.

I saw an opportunity.

With the money I had, I partnered with two other people, and we purchased six vending machines for $3,500.Combo machines—snacks and drinks. We locked in a few locations and got to work.

That was the beginning.

Fast forward, and I learned how to scale, lock in better locations, and build vending into a system that runs itself. And now, I’m giving you three simple steps to start your own vending business—even if you’ve never done this before.

Step 1: Pick the Right Machine & Products

Your machine is your money maker. Choose the right one, or you’ll regret it later.

✔️ Snack & drink machines (best for offices, schools, gyms, warehouses)

✔️ Specialty machines (coffee, ice, beauty products, CBD, etc.)

✔️ Bulk machines (gumballs, candy—low-cost entry)

Start smart. If you’re on a budget, buy used. No need to drop $5K+ on a brand-new machine. But something felt… off.

I was writing about everything but not focused on what really mattered.

And then, one day, it hit me:

✔ What do people actually want?

✔ What problem am I solving?

✔ What am I really doing here?

So I scrapped LyfeUnscripted and made a bold move.

🚀 Welcome to Clocking Out for Good. 🚀

Because this isn’t just a newsletter.

This is a movement.

A movement for people who are done trading time for money.

For people who want to own their time, build real income, and finally break free from the 9-to-5 cycle.

For people like you.

Subscribe now

🛑 Real Talk: Do You Actually Own Your Life?

Let me ask you something.

✔ Do you feel like your job owns you?

✔ Do you hate asking for permission just to take a vacation?

✔ Do you have skills, talents, and ideas that you know could make money—but you just don’t know how?

If any of that hit home, you’re in the right place.

Because here’s the truth: Most people will spend their entire lives working for someone else.

They’ll clock in, clock out, and keep repeating the cycle until retirement—hoping they saved enough money to enjoy life after spending 40+ years working.

🚨 That’s the trap.

And if you don’t wake up and make a plan, you’ll get stuck in it.

💡 The Moment That Changed Everything

For years, I thought the only way to make more money was to work more hours.

Then I got paid $2,500 for a 45-minute speech.

Then I got paid $5,000 for a 15-minute speech.

Then I put vending machines in the right location and grossed $3,000 in a month—without even being there.

And suddenly, my mindset shifted.

Wait… so you’re telling me I can make more in an hour using my skills than I can in an entire month at my job?

Yup.

And the best part? It wasn’t a fluke.

I realized three things:

💡 You don’t escape the 9-to-5 by wishing—you do it by learning how to monetize what you already have.

💡 People will pay you for your skills—if you know how to position them.

💡 The goal isn’t just making money once—it’s creating systems that pay you over and over again.

And now? Because a lot of people wake up every day with two eyes, yet they can’t see. They see their problems, their obstacles, their lack—but they have no vision for where they’re going.

They only see today.

And eyesight? Eyesight is tricky. It can be a blessing and a curse. Because eyesight is only concerned with right now.

Eyesight shows you:

• Your bank account balance today.

• Your follower count today.

• Your business sales today.

• The fact that no one is checking for you today.

And if you’re not careful, eyesight will make you believe that today is all there is.

But vision?

Vision is different. Vision is for tomorrow. Vision is for what could be. Vision is for what you know deep down is possible—even if no one else can see it yet.

The Power of Vision

Vision is everything. It’s the difference between settling for what is and pushing toward what could be. It’s the force that keeps you moving forward when nothing around you looks like success.

Vision is what wakes you up early, keeps you up late, and drives you even when you don’t see results yet.

But here’s the thing: vision takes time.

And that’s where most people give up.

Share

What Happens When You Lose Your Vision?

You go blind.

Not physically—mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.

When you lose your vision, you stop believing in what’s possible. You stop seeing the bigger picture. You stop moving toward the dream.

And when that happens, you settle.

• You settle for a job you hate because you don’t believe you can create your own opportunities.

• You settle for relationships that drain you because you don’t see yourself deserving better.

• You settle for “realistic” goals instead of chasing the dream that sets your soul on fire.

Without vision, you accept life as it is instead of fighting for what it could be.

But here’s the good news: You can get your vision back.

And it starts with reminding yourself why you started in the first place.

The Waiting Season: Why Vision Takes Time

Your vision isn’t small, so don’t expect it to happen overnight.

Some people are building lemonade stands while you’re building an empire.

Their success looks instant—but their vision is small. They can buy lemons today, set up a table, and start making money tomorrow.

But you?

You’re trying to build a glamping retreat (don’t mind me—that part’s for me).

That takes land. That takes funding. That takes investors. That takes time.

And that’s where patience comes in.

Because when your vision is big, your preparation has to be bigger.

If you’re in a waiting season, understand this: You’re not stuck. You’re being prepared.

• The connections you need? You haven’t met them yet.

• The knowledge you need? You’re still gaining it.

• The doors you need to open? They’re still being built.

So don’t get weary. Don’t lose hope. Don’t lose focus.

The Right People Matter

A vision this big can’t be built alone.

Along the way, you’re going to meet people who hold the keys to your next level. A mentor, an investor, a business partner, or even a random conversation that changes everything.

But here’s the catch: You have to be open.

Be friendly. Be curious. Be willing to learn.

You never know who has the missing piece to your puzzle.

Subscribe now

My Vision, My Journey

Right now, I live at home with my parents. Not because I failed. Not because I’m stuck. But because I’m strategizing. I’m saving money, getting out of debt, and building my dream.

Right now, I’m still driving the same car I had in high school. It’s not the flashiest. It’s not brand new. But it runs. It gets me where I need to go. And one day, I’ll have that brand-new car—but right now, I’m building something bigger.

Because vision requires sacrifice.

Some days, I wonder if it’s all worth it. Some days, I feel like I’m putting in all this effort and nothing is changing.

But then I remember: Eyesight is deceiving.

See, I’ve had moments where I made $5,000 in 15 minutes from a single speaking engagement. And I’ve had months where no one booked me for anything. That’s the process. That’s the journey.

And if you only rely on eyesight, you’ll think the slow moments mean you should quit.

You’ll think,

“This isn’t working.”

“Maybe I’m not good enough.”

“Maybe I should just be realistic.”

But vision says,

“This is just the beginning.”

“Great things take time.”

“This small start won’t stay small forever.”

I just started a YouTube channel for my vending company. Right now? Three subscribers. (I would appreciate your support @TurnerVending) YouTube

But guess what? I just started. And everything that’s great started small. The Bible says, Never despise small beginnings. And I believe that.

Keep Your Vision Alive

If you’ve been feeling discouraged, frustrated, or stuck, let this be your reminder:

• Your vision is valid.

• Your dream is possible.

• Your time is coming.

Don’t let eyesight fool you into thinking today is all there is.

Because sight shows you the now, but vision shows you the next.

And if you stay the course, trust the process, and refuse to settle—what you see in your mind will one day be what you see in your life.

Trust the vision. As kids, we dream big—I want to be an astronaut. I want to be a doctor. That you’re foolish for even trying.

And I felt that.

Because I’ve had people look at me and say, “That’s not how life works.”

I’ve had people tell me, “You’re living in a fantasy.”

They laugh, I laugh—but deep down, I know this:

Everything I have ever set out to do, I have accomplished.

Not because it was easy. David? Small, underestimated, counted out. But what did David have? Hustle. Drive. Resilience.

And that’s what people forget—it’s not about the size of the person, it’s about the size of the fight inside them.

One thing about me? If you tell me I can’t do something, I HAVE to go do it.

If you say it’s impossible, I feel this undeniable need to prove you wrong.

That’s how I live my life.

I dream it. At 22, I had a plan. I was going to get my master’s degree from the University of Central Florida, land a dream job, and become the first Black woman to serve as a collegiate athletic director. That was the vision. That was my purpose—or so I thought.

But life didn’t follow my plan. Every door I knocked on stayed shut. The opportunities I prayed for didn’t come. I was determined—I’ve always been a fighter—but nothing seemed to work.

Meanwhile, everyone around me seemed to thrive. My friends were buying homes, starting families, and landing dream jobs. I, on the other hand, had to move back home with my parents, working an overnight job for $10 an hour. I felt like a failure.

The Dark Night of the Soul

One night, I sat alone in my room, overwhelmed by frustration. I felt angry with God. I had done everything “right”—so why wasn’t my life moving forward? Why was I stuck? Behind it were ready-made jobs, businesses, and opportunities. Everything was prepared for me. All I had to do was walk in. It would be easy, comfortable even. But deep down, I knew it wasn’t mine. Walking through that door meant living a life someone else had created for me.

The second door was different. When I opened it, there was nothing but empty space. No path, no safety net, just potential. God said to me, “This is your purpose. But you’ll have to build it yourself. It will be hard. There will be days you’ll feel lost, frustrated, and unseen. But if you trust Me, this path will take you to places you never imagined.”

Standing in front of those two doors, I made my choice. I chose the second door—the door of uncertainty, frustration, and faith.

Walking by Vision, Not Sight

Here’s the thing about faith: it requires vision. And vision isn’t the same as eyesight. Eyesight shows you what’s right in front of you:

• An empty bank account.

• Zero followers on Substack.

• Missed opportunities.

Vision, on the other hand, shows you what could be. It shows you speaking on stages, inspiring others, building a legacy. Vision is what keeps you moving forward when the physical evidence isn’t there yet.

When I chose that second door, I had no idea what would happen. I just knew I didn’t want to live with regret. I didn’t want to get to the end of my life wondering, What if I had tried?

The Reward of Faith

Since that day, I’ve experienced things I never could have planned for. I’ve spoken to NFL teams like the Pittsburgh Steelers. I’ve built a vending machine business. I’ve written two books. I’ve traveled, connected with incredible people, and seen God work in ways I never thought possible.

None of this is to boast—it’s to show you what can happen when you take the leap. When you walk by faith, not by sight.

The Danger of Letting the Music Die

The truth is, many people will never open that second door. helpful—it’s draining. It creates frustration, anxiety, and unnecessary self-doubt. You start questioning your writing, comparing yourself to others, and wondering, What am I doing wrong? But here’s the truth: Obsessing over numbers won’t make them grow.

What Actually Works

What will help? Perspective and focus. If you want people to follow you, give them a reason to. Write valuable content. Be friendly and intentional. Engage with others. The law of attraction applies here—what you give is what you’ll receive.

• Put out great content, and people will follow you for your insight.

• Be friendly and supportive, and others will mirror that energy back to you.

• Engage authentically by subscribing, restacking, commenting, and lifting up other creators. This isn’t just about growing your platform—it’s about building real connections.

Focus on What You Can Control

Of course, we all want results, but letting the outcome consume you isn’t sustainable. Instead, focus on what you can control: your craft. Spend time refining your skills, perfecting your voice, and making your writing so good that people can’t help but notice.

Serving Those Who Are Already Here

Even with 42 subscribers, I remind myself of this: I owe them my best. They’ve chosen to trust me with their time, and that’s worth everything. Whether I’m engaging with others, commenting on posts, or lifting up someone’s work, I’m giving my all to the process—not just the result.

Growth Is a Process, Not a Sprint

Growth doesn’t happen overnight. But when you’re consistent, intentional, and generous with your time and effort, it will come. Stay focused on creating value, and trust that the right people will find you.

Subscribe now

If this post resonated with you or gave you a fresh perspective, I’d love to hear your thoughts! We’re up here because of 4 AMs. We’re up here because of two-a-days and five-a-days. We’re up here because of the work we put in when no one was watching.”

What he was saying was powerful: the spotlight, the applause, the recognition—it doesn’t come because of what happens in the light. It comes because of the effort you put in when no one’s around.

It’s the 4 AM grind when the rest of the world is still asleep.
